On the southern end of Vancouver Island near Chemainus, British Columbia, resides the Halalt First Nation, who were in need of a gym for quite some time. ATCO Sustainable Communities was contracted to design and build the new 6,500 sq. ft. facility containing the gymnasium, change rooms and washrooms, and features a hardwood basketball court and wall-mounted basketball backboards.
The Halalt First Nation relied on ATCO to deliver the building under a tight construction timeline. ATCO constructed sections of the gym offsite utilizing pre-engineered and modular technologies. Completed modules and other components were then shipped to Vancouver Island where local contractors, under ATCO supervision, took care of the assembly and finish work.
Local resources were used for pouring concrete, general labour and engineering to help keep the money in the community.
The gym offers basketball, volleyball, badminton, and indoor soccer for kids of all ages. Programs are open to all Halalt First Nation members, as well as the surrounding community.

"I see this gym benefiting our members by giving them access to more influential people from outside our community, promoting healthy living and healthy lifestyles, and getting everyone active and social within the community."
